Ontario Calf Roper Wins Central Plains Region (from the Rodeo Classified forum)

Altus, OK
WOSC Qualifies Three for National Finals

The WOSC rodeo team had another successful rodeo recently at the Northeastern Oklahoma A & M University’s rodeo in Miami. This rodeo marked the end of the college rodeo season. At the end of the rodeo, the years’ points were totaled to determine the event champions and national qualifiers. The top three individuals in each event qualify for the College National Finals Rodeo in Casper, WY June 14-20.

Jaron Nooren from Ontario, Canada topped the field of Tie Down Ropers for the season and earned the title of 2009 Central Plains Regional Champion. This is quite an accomplishment for any roper, let alone a freshman athlete. Nooren’s dedicated work ethic was a large part of his success this year. He qualified for four of the ten short-go rounds this year. For the Miami rodeo, Nooren won second in the long round with a smart run of 9.6 seconds. He broke the barrier in the long round, but still picked-up points for sixth in the average.

Alabaman Kyle Irwin qualified for the College National Finals Rodeo as the third place regional finisher in Steer Wrestling. Irwin, who is also a freshman athlete, was a consistent competitor this year, qualifying for five of the ten short-go rounds. Irwin’s successful weekend at Miami helped cinch his qualification. His quick time of 3.5 seconds in the long round was good enough to win first. He duplicated his time in the short-round, however he broke the barrier.

The talented Trevor Kastner from Ardmore also qualified for the CNFR in the bull riding. Although he was only able to compete at seven of the ten rodeos, he still finished the year second place in the Central Plains Region. Of those seven rodeos, Kastner picked-up points at five of the rodeos. Kastner is presently rehabilitating a knee injury he suffered during a practice session in March, however he has been riding with the injury and will postpone surgery until after the CNFR.

Coach Guy Smith is excited to be taking three athletes to the College National Finals Rodeo this summer. The three cowboys that qualified all have a great chance to bring home a National Intercollegiate Rodeo title for WOSC.

WOSC also had several other athletes do well at the Northeastern Oklahoma A & M Rodeo.

WOSC’s top female rodeo athlete, Caila Parker just missed qualifying for the College National Finals Rodeo as a Women’s All-Around competitor, finishing the year in third place.

It certainly wasn’t for lack of try though. She qualified for the short-round in the goat tying and breakaway roping. In the goat tying she won third in the long-round with a time of 8.1 seconds. Her short-round time of 8.9 seconds placed her third in the go-round and third in the average. In the breakaway roping, Parker won first in the long-round with her time of 2.7 seconds. She won second in the short-round with her time of 2.9 seconds and second in the average.

Dayton Roworth from Alberta qualified for the short-round in the steer wrestling with his time of 4.5 seconds in the long-round. However, a broken barrier took him out of contention for average points.

Dallas Gardner from British Columbia qualified for the short-round in the breakaway roping in tenth place with her time of 3.3 seconds. However, she missed her calf in the short-round.

Jenna Ramage from Mississippi had a time of 9.4 seconds in the long-round of the goat tying. This qualified her for the short-round in tenth place. A 10.4 second run in the short-go earned her sixth place points in the go-round.

MEMORIAL FOR A WELL KNOWN RODEO CONTENDER

(By Cindy Brygman)

I fell in love with a horse named Kansas, originally owned and competed with by Steve Zalvin.  He was a noble horse and was a true cowboy at heart.  He never complained and was tough as nails.  I can only thank Steve Zalvin for allowing me to enjoy the rest of his retirement days with me on our farm.  He gave it his all when all you asked for was a little bit...but that was the way he was...devoted...and even though he seemed tough on the outside, he was all soft and squishy on the inside.  Thank you  Kansas for being a babysitter for Jordyn and teaching her how to ride...Thank you kansas for being buddies with the less dominant ones in the herd...Thank you Kansas for being the greatest horse ever.  You will always be in our hearts.
Kansas was laid to rest on March 1, 2009.

Ontario Steer Wrestler wins the International Professional Rodeo  World Championship at the International Finals Rodeo (IFR39) in Oklahoma City.

by Jennifer Mousseau

Matthew Mousseau of R R 2 Dashwood, & formerly of Hensall area, travelled to Oklahoma City Jan 16-18/09 sitting fourth in the IPRA World Standings in Steer Wrestling, approximately $3,500 behind the leader.   Only the top 15 in each of the seven standard rodeo events, from across the US & eastern Canada, qualify to compete at the IPRA World Championship.   Qualifiers from Ontario included Stewart Cahill, Strathroy, in Team Roping; B J Prince of Pontypool, in Saddlebronc; Dean Dobinson, London, in Saddle Bronc; Robin Williamson of Acton,  in Ladies Barrels; Ross Scully of Rockwood, in Tie Down Roping and Luke McCoag of Port Rowan, in Bull Riding.  Several contestants qualified from Quebec.

Going into the finals, in second spot, was Tooter Silver of Warner, OK and  in third spot, Justin Thigpen of Waycross, GA.

In the first of 4 rounds, Matt tied for 1st with the leader, Donny Tyner of Huntersville, NC with a time of 4 seconds.  Matt was riding his 10 yr old sorrel  Quarter Horse mare, Solo, whom he trained himself, as a "dogging' horse.  Earl Foster of Foster's Cattle Recovery, Alvinston, On. with his horse Grizzly made the trip to Oklahoma, to haze for Matt.  In the second round, Matt was second with a time of 3.7 seconds.  In the 3rd round, Matt had a time of 3.8 for a 4th place finish.  It was a nail biter right up to the last competitor in the 4th round on Sunday.  Matt was the 3rd last competitor, having climbed to third in the leaderboard & first in the average. He won the round with a time of 3.7, clinching the IFR39 World Championship Steer Wrestling title.  Matt came home proudly displaying his custom trophy saddle, 2 go round buckles, prize money,  the average buckle & the gold buckle, declaring him the IPRA World Champion Steer Wrestler.   Matt had the most consistent times in his event beating out former world champions Ronnie Fields & Jordan Wiseman, both of Oklahoma.

Matt got his start in Steer Wrestling, attending a clinic in 2000 in Crediton, Ont, put on by former ORA champion Ed DeWetering.  Matt continued to hone his skills and competed in rodeos across Ontario, Quebec & the United States.
In 2001, he won the Rookie buckle on the Ontario Rodeo Association circuit.  Steer Wrestling championship titles were won on the ORA Circuit in 2002, 2005, 2006 & 2008.  Matt was the Ontario Dodge Circuit Champion in  2002 & 2007.  Matt won a berth to the Canadian Cowboy Association Rodeo Finals at the Agribition in Regina in 2007.  He finished 2nd in the average.

This "cowboy" comes from a "horse" background.  His Dad & Mom met showing horses. His uncle, Barry, was several time ORA  Saddle Bronc,  Steer Wrestling & All Round Champion.  Matt's cousin, Cody, is a multiple Ontario High School Rodeo Association Team Roping Champion  & the 2008 Calf Roping Champion, a steer wrestler & was second in the 2008 IPRA Rookie All Around standings. His aunt, Jennifer, is a former ORA Barrel Racing champion. Matt's aunt, Lori, shows horses, as does his cousin, Samantha.  Lloyd, Matt's grandfather, was one of the founding or early members of the original Exeter Rodeo Committee & Past President.

History was made in Oklahoma City in January at the IFR,  the Steer Wrestling capitol of the world, with Mousseau being the first Canadian ever to win both the average and the world title. Matt appreciates the support he has received from family and friends.

ROPING RAISES MONEY FOR GREG HATFIELD

Roping and rodeo friends gathered together on November 1st at the Wild Colt Ranch northeast of Stratford, to raise money for Greg Hatfield.

Greg was a member of the Ontario Rodeo Association for 8 years, during which time he was a competitor and a judge. He left Ontario in 1997 and is now living in Gentry, Arkansas.

Greg was diagnosed with ALS (Lou Gehrig's Disease) this past spring, and by all accounts, it is progressing rapidly. He has already been forced to give up his job, as he is no longer able to perform physically demanding tasks. Unfortunately Greg has no health insurance with which to supplement his very-increasing needs.

Kathy Smith, Kathy Adams and Amy Hatfield organized the benefit which included breakaway roping, team roping, Silent/Chinese Auction and a dinner.

Greg was a surprise guest of honour – the ALS Society paid his return airfare to Buffalo and Ray and Kathy Smith picked him up and brought him to the roping.

Money raised so far totalled over $6,700 and included donations; entry fees and calcuttas from breakaway and team roping; auctions; dinner and the concession stand.  Auction and food items were all donations.

The breakaway roping was won by Shari Cahill and Robin Hammond was second.  The team roping was a “draw pot” format where you enter as a header or heeler and partners are randomly drawn for you.  There were 63 teams, 3 go rounds and the winners were paid on the average.

1st – Ray Smith & Charlie DeBrabandere

2nd – Ray Smith & John Scully

3rd – Ross Scully & Stewart Cahill

4th – Chris Murphy & Brad Bowie

Following is a thank you from the benefit organizers:

GREG HATFIELD FUND-RAISER ~~~ A THANK YOU!

Wow - what a tremendous day we had on Saturday, November 1st at the fund-raiser for Greg Hatfield.

There was a fabulous turn out of people, we are estimating that about 100 people showed up to offer their support and $6,700 was raised!! Greg was able to be in attendance thanks to the ALS Association near where he lives. They surprised him on Monday, October 27th and advised him that he would be on a plane that Friday. We know it thrilled him to be able to see so many friendly faces, many of which he hasn't seen in a long, long time. It seemed as though everyone had a great time (perhaps some more than others - Hey Chris!!) and folks certainly showed up with their Cowboy Hearts.

First and foremost, we must send an over the top Thank You to Chris Murphy & Lindsay Kawalez AND Al & Karyn Foster. This benefit would not have been possible without their kindness and generosity. Chris & Lindsay donated their beautiful facility for our event. They did not know Greg prior to Saturday but none the less opened their hearts for this fund-raiser. It was the perfect place to hold an event like this. Al & Karyn donated all the stock that day and with over 550 runs we tired the poor critters out! Of course it would have been impossible to host a roping without an arena and cattle. A simple Thank You doesn't seem to cover what they so graciously supplied.

We also need to send a wondrous Thank You to Cheryl Dunk & Tracy Pighin. They took care of entries and absolutely everything that went along with the roping. They spent the whole day sitting up top in the arena calculating roping and calcutta winners, doing payouts and drawing partners & stock. This day couldn't have happened without your help. We, the organizers, didn't have a clue how to manage everything you did and you saved our butts!

Also deserving of a big Thank You are Bruce Murray (Snowball!) and Pat Mulligan. Bruce was our announcer for the day and spent the day keeping everyone organized. Pat Mulligan was a terrific help with his auctioneering expertise during the calcuttas. Both of them gave a professional flair to the event.

We owe a tremendous Thank You to all of those folks who volunteered their help in the arena. People just jumped in with flagging, timing, stripping ropes and pushing stock. We're afraid there were so many of you that we don't have all your names! We never had to hunt for anyone to fill a spot or pitch in with a job. Again (& we're sure it has become repetitious by now), we could not have held this event without your help.

Thank you to Brad & Shannon Adams for providing the meat & baked eans. Yummy! Pat Jamieson was a great help with the concession stand. We would have been lost without Candace & Jen managing the auction. Your assistance is appreciated.

How to thank the many, many people who showed up on that beautiful sunny Saturday? Incredible. It was great to see so many recognizable faces and also plenty of folks who we're certain didn't know Greg but showed up out of compassion anyway. You spent gas money getting there, brought auction items, cooked food for the dinner, donated your hard-earned money and enjoyed a day of roping. It does a heart good to be involved in a benefit such as this and it is difficult to convey the feeling of gratitude. In Cowboy spirit we thank you.

R.A.O. FINALS NOTES (FROM JOE SCULLY)

Awards

Once the awards were presented, I flew up the road for the start of the Roping Association of Ontario Finals.  In a mad-rush, I set-up speakers and computers, and we commenced at 7:30.

The Tiedown Roping Finals was won by Jarod Nooren, who had amassed a half-dozen buckles earlier that day...and he became, “The People’s Champion”.  He had an amazing Roping Finals, as he was the sole contender to rope 4 for 4, placing 2nd, 1st, 2nd, 1st across the goes and 1st in the aggregate.

Charlotte Eskra went 3 for 4 to win the RAO Break-away Roping Finals, also taking a pile of money across the rounds.

Then the first Jackpots of the year took place where Jessie Robson won the Breakaway going 2 for 3 being the sole to catch 2, and Jarod Nooren won another competition, going 3 for 3, winning 2 goes and placing 2nd in the other, thus winning the aggregate by over 13.5 seconds.

Awards

Just when we thought our Saturday Night would be over (past midnight as the Jackpot concluded), Jason Thomson, Ross Scully and Jarod Nooren had a 6-head Match.  The intense competition showed the People’s Champion the winner, once again, winning 4 of 6 Go’s, placing 2nd in the two remaining, and the only contender to go 6 for 6.

Finally, the roping ended at 1:15am, and I got home at 1:45am to sleep.

The next morning I began setting up in the rain outside, and after finishing “mic check”...they changed their mind, and we tore it all down and moved indoors.  The only positive was that I knew where the cables had to go indoors....

Starting with the #3 Team Roping, only 2 teams went 3 for 4 , and John Bridge won by 2.0 seconds.

Into the #2 Team Roping, Paul Yaccobucci and his partner were the only team to go 3 for 4, and he became the 2008 #2 Team Roping RAO Finals Champion.

Awards

Into the #1 Team Roping, Emily Forrest and her partner were the only team to go 3 for 4, and she became the 2008 #1 Team Roping RAO Finals Champion.

Then Lunch Break, AGM, and into the First Jackpot of 2009.  The First Jackpot was the most fun roping I’ve ever announced...I got to play Game Show Host!

The Stock Contractor, Ed DeWetering had declared a “Bounty Steer”, which is like a permanent fresh steer: quick, fast to run up the rope, etc.  He said there would be a $50 Bounty to the first team to draw it, and if they declined, he’d be out of the draw.

The First team to get him consisted of Brian Roworth and Brad Heffernan.  Early into the First-Go, they wouldn’t take it, as $50 wasn’t worth the loss of the Aggregate pay.  I then tried to negotiate it up to $100, and they still declined.  I refused to let them Score the Steer, and as the Steer ran by them, I said, “Did you hear that?  The Bounty Steer just Giggled!”

Awards

I talked the Contractor into letting the next team “Buy In” at $25.

Next Team: Brent Tupling and Dennis Johnson.  They wouldn’t partake.  Out the Steer went again.

Next Team: John Bridge and Mark Coulson.  Coulson declared that he wouldn’t pay to rope the steer...so, I called his bluff and put down their $25.00 entry.  They went...and missed.  Big risk as they were 2nd in the Aggregate after 1...but, that was a secret....

Next Team:  Jarod Nooren and Mark Coulson.  Once again, the team wouldn’t pay, but would take them.  The Pot was now over $100.  It was an easy sale as Nooren had become “The People’s Champ”, and they almost put it together...solid on the Front End, but a stutter step on the back-end cost them a time.

All of the Rodeo-Run-type ropers were counting the steers, hoping to draw it in the last go.

Relaxing

His last time through had Dean Stockdale and Bruce Guillet drawing him.  As I walked toward the chute, I heard John Bridge say, “Why risk $200 in the Go-Round just to win $150?”.  I became Howie Mandell again.

I repeated what was said.  Then laid down the scenario, “Ok, you’re going for the Go-Round, yes.  Why not take the steer that is guaranteed not to shut down.  The steer that you have to rope on the corner on.  The steer that you have to be quick on...when you need to be quick to win the go.  Why?  The answer is simple.  Yes, there’s $200 to be won in the Go.  But!  There’s an additional $150 if you win the Go on this Steer.  That’s $350 in one run.  To that, Mr. Bridge, I say ‘Game, Set, Match!’”.

Stockdale and Guillet took “The Deal”.  I ran down the arena following the Run.  Stockdale smoked the horns.  Guillet caught both back Feet...and at the last fraction of a second...the steer kicked out.  The place went wiiiiiilllld!

Soon thereafter we had a Beef BBQ Dinner, Awards, a few cocktails and called it a Weekend.

The Year-end and Specialty Awards will be posted shortly on www.ropingontario.com

The Marathon Weekend was a blast.  Tons of exciting action to be a part of.  Unfortunately I only got 7 hours sleep Thursday Night, 6 hours sleep Friday Night and 4.5 hours sleep Saturday Night, so I spent my Holiday Monday cutting zzzzzzzz’s.

But now, just a week and a half to the ORA Season Opener!
